The President of North Macedonia, Gordana Siljanovska Davkova, has reacted after serious incidents during the basketball match between Macedonia and Romania, held this weekend in the city of Kumanovo, where local fans made fascist and threatening calls towards Albanians.
In a public reaction via social media, the president expressed her indignation and declared that the Macedonian people are ashamed of the behavior of a group of fans, who, according to her, "hit not only our fellow Albanian citizens, but all of us, even ourselves, with bullets of hatred."
Siljanovska Davkova stressed that “Macedonia cannot and will no longer allow sports arenas to be transformed into arenas of hatred and violence.” She said it is time for a new civic and sports education that starts at home and continues in schools, emphasizing that the state must teach citizens “how to cheer for sports, not for hatred.”
The incident has sparked strong reactions in public opinion and on the political scene, as senior state officials, including the Macedonian Prime Minister, were present at the stadium, while calls such as "A good Albanian is a dead Albanian" and "Gas chamber for Albanians" have been considered dangerous language with Nazi rhetoric.
The President called on institutions to react decisively and hold accountable those who incite ethnic hatred. (A2 Televizion)
