The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Serbia, Ivica Dacic, announced that Serbia has applied for membership in the Executive Board of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, otherwise known as UNESCO.
The new members of the Executive Board will be voted on November 15 and the candidates are Albania, Russia, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Uzbekistan.
During his speech, Dacic said that the Serbian cultural heritage in Kosovo is in danger, adding that "the international troops, which have the duty to preserve the Serbian cultural heritage, are deployed only in some cultural assets".
He estimated that the Serbian cultural heritage in Kosovo, where there are 1,300 countries, is of great importance not only when it comes to the national identity of Serbia, but also represents a valuable part of the European and world cultural heritage.
The authorities in Kosovo believe that with UNESCO membership, many cultural heritage objects in Kosovo would enjoy protection at the international level. Three Orthodox monasteries in Kosovo are under the protection of UNESCO: the Patriarchate of Peja, the Monastery of Deçani, that of Graçanica, but also the Church of Saint Premta in Prizren.
