North Macedonian officials have strongly condemned a statement by Bulgaria's far-right leader, who called for Macedonia and Bulgaria to unite into a single state based on an idea recently floated by US President-elect Donald Trump. , for the union of the USA with Canada.

The leader of the far-right political party in Bulgaria, Rilindja, Kostadin Kostadinov, said that "there is nothing more logical than two states with a common history, common origin, common language and common people, such as Bulgaria and Macedonia, which to become a single state".

This statement was condemned as "shameful and dishonest" by the president of North Macedonia, Gordana Silanovska-Davkova.

"On the contrary, the intention to express it unilaterally in this way actually means disrespect, means non-recognition", said Gordana Silanovska-Davkova.

"Such malicious statements by the officials of the Bulgarian political scene are a direct attack on the sovereignty, integrity and independence of our country and at the same time are in direct opposition to the rules and principles of international law, the non-interference of states in their affairs internal affairs and the policy of building good neighborly relations", says the reaction.

On the other hand, Venko Filipçe, MP and leader of the opposition Social Democratic League, demanded that Sofia react and distance itself clearly and unequivocally from Kostadinov's statements, while the European Union, as he said, condemns his statement.

"I call on the European Union to clearly condemn this position, which violates universal human rights and European values, and to show that such statements have no place in the EU," wrote Filipçe, on his official Facebook profile.

Bulgaria demands that North Macedonia recognize the Bulgarian minority as a national minority. To do this, constitutional changes are needed.

To implement constitutional changes, a two-thirds majority is needed. The parliamentary majority in North Macedonia currently consists of 78 MPs out of a total of 120 in the Parliament. REL (A2 Televizion)
