Rallies on the second anniversary of the Tempi tragedy have paralyzed all of Greece and brought back images of violent protests a decade ago in the Hellenic capital.

In Athens, large police forces had to use tear gas to disperse angry crowds of demonstrators who threw Molotov cocktails at officers and attempted to storm Parliament.

Police officers pushed the rebels back from the lower part of Syntagma Square amidst the flames, while on the orders of the Speaker of the Parliament, dozens of ordinary citizens who were in the square or felt discomfort from the tear gas entered the building for protection.

Protesters wearing hoods and masks also set fire to the officers' changing room at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, while after police intervention, incidents continued on Mitropoleos Street.

Injuries were reported from the incidents. Of the people who fainted in central Athens, two were taken to the Red Cross and one to Elpis Hospital, while about 40 protesters received first aid at the Parliament infirmary.

Over 100-150 protesters who were at the scene of the incident and the exchange of Molotov cocktails and tear gas were assisted by police.

Earlier, as ELAS announced, in the checks carried out in central Athens before the start of the rally for the Tempi accident, 84 people were stopped, of whom 41 were arrested.

There are also episodes of violence in Thessaloniki. Incidents continue near the railway station, which began when a group of people who were at the end of a march headed towards the police.

These people were wearing hoods and began throwing Molotov cocktails, stones and bottles at the police. The security forces responded by firing tear gas. (A2 Televizion)
