Kenya has today recognized Kosovo as an independent state, becoming the 105th country to grant international recognition to Kosovo. The decision came after a long period of diplomatic efforts by Serbia to block this recognition, including high-level visits such as that of Tamara Vučić, the wife of Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, who visited Kenya in October 2024.
The President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, confirmed the recognition of Kosovo by Kenya, underlining the importance of this decision and emphasizing that Kenya has taken a historic step to support Kosovo's independence. The President of Kenya, William Ruto, signed the document recognizing Kosovo, making Kenya one of the countries contributing to strengthening Kosovo's position in the international arena.
Despite Serbia's intensive efforts, which included direct lobbying and diplomatic talks with Kenyan officials, Kenya decided to recognize Kosovo's sovereignty. This step has reinforced Kosovo's position as an independent state and sent a strong message of continued support for Kosovo's independence to the world.
However, Kosovo still remains a non-member state of the UN, due to the opposition of several veto-wielding states, such as Russia and China, which do not recognize Pristina as an independent state. Following this recognition, Kosovo hopes that other recognitions will follow in the coming months, thus opening the way for it to achieve membership in important international organizations.
