Five police officers were killed in a macabre attack in Mexico on Monday, after being ambushed by a group of armed men in the southern state of Chiapas.
State Governor Eduardo Ramirez, through a post on the 'X' platform, said the attack occurred in the community of Frontera Comalapa while officers were on patrol.
The country's Ministry of Security, for its part, published a photo showing a completely burned-out police vehicle, abandoned on the side of the road.
He also said that more than 1,000 police officers had been deployed to handle the situation and ensure security in the area.
Chiapas, on the border with Guatemala, has become a scene of conflict between gangs, which claim control of extortion and migrant smuggling.
The violence, which is believed to be linked to the actions of cartels, has claimed the lives of more than 480,000 people in Mexico since 2006, when then-President Felipe Calderón ordered the launch of a "war on drugs" involving the armed forces within the country. (A2 Televizion)
