A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck northeastern Taiwan this morning. According to estimates from the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake occurred at a depth of about 70 kilometers in Yilan County, near the capital Taipei, where the tremors were clearly felt.
According to local media, there are currently no significant reports of damage to people or property.
The last major earthquake in Taiwan, a highly seismic area, occurred in April 2024, when the island was hit by a 7.4-magnitude quake, the strongest in 25 years. At least 17 people were killed in landslides and severe damage to buildings around Hualien. (A2 Televizion)
