The mass evacuations came after a strong earthquake struck Puerto Williams in the Drake Passage near the Chilean and Argentine coasts.
The Chilean National Service for Disaster Prevention and Response said the coastal area of the Magallanes region in southern Chile will be evacuated due to the risk of a tsunami.
The United States Geological Survey confirmed the earthquake, saying the quake occurred between Cape Horn and Antarctica.
Photos showed civilians fleeing buildings as part of evacuations after the earthquake. Dramatic footage showed people leaving their homes and walking towards a security checkpoint in the South American country.
