Bomb alert at US base in Italy, area cordoned off

The US Air Force Station in Sicily, NAS Sigonella, was isolated for more than two hours due to the presence of a suspicious vehicle near one of the base's main entrances.

According to reports from local authorities, it was suspected that the found vehicle might contain explosives, which led to security measures being taken and traffic in the area being stopped.

After Italian authorities, including the Carabinieri and US Navy bomb disposal experts, conducted a detailed inspection of the vehicle, it was determined that there was no threat.

Further checks were carried out throughout the perimeter of the base, which is under the command of the Italian Air Force, and the situation stabilized after a few hours.

NAS Sigonella, also known as NAS2, is one of the major bases of the US Armed Forces and a strategic point for NATO operations in the Mediterranean.

The base is used by the US Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps for logistics, surveillance and transport missions, as well as for operational support in various regions, including Europe, Africa and the Middle East. (A2 Televizion)
