Tens of thousands of people protested in Spain against plans by acting Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez to grant amnesty to Catalan separatists in exchange for support for another term in office.
The government secured a deal with the Catalan separatist Junts party on Thursday, which includes passing a controversial law granting amnesty to those convicted of Catalonia's 2017 bid to break away from Spain.
The deal sent shock waves across the country, with Sanchez's conservative opponents accusing him of making decisions for political gain.
Authorities said 80,000 people turned out in Madrid, but protest organizers said nearly a million protested.
After the July 23 election, the Socialists spent weeks negotiating with smaller parties, including the far-left Sumar platform and the Catalan, Galician and Basque nationalist parties. (A2 Televizion)
