A planned press conference between US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been canceled, the White House said. Instead, the two leaders will hold a more limited session with reporters to take questions in the Oval Office, according to the Trump administration.
According to White House officials, the reason for canceling the press conference was that such an event would have created two separate press opportunities: one during the Oval Office greeting and another for the subsequent press conference. They explained that this could have caused an excessive workload for the two leaders and therefore decided to reduce the media coverage.
Instead of a regular press conference, a more condensed event will be held, with a much smaller number of journalists present.
Netanyahu's visit to the US comes at a delicate moment for both leaders. Trump is under pressure over his tariff policy that has caused tensions in global markets, while Netanyahu faces questions over Israeli attacks on Gaza that resulted in the deaths of 15 international aid workers.
One of the biggest issues that remains unresolved is how these developments will affect trade relations between the United States and Israel, and whether Netanyahu's visit will influence the lifting or reversal of Trump's tariff policies.
Interestingly, Netanyahu is the first world leader to visit Trump after the US administration imposed new tariffs on countries around the world. Although they were seen greeting each other with a firm handshake before the talks, President Trump dodged questions from reporters about the impact of the tariffs on global markets and whether he plans to lift the measures against Israel.
