"Arrest and hand over Netanyahu!" Orban warned about Israeli PM's

The International Criminal Court has warned Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban about the visit of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, for whom there is an international arrest warrant.

"This is not only a legal obligation towards the Court itself, as provided for by the Rome Statute, but also a responsibility towards other States Parties. It is not for individual States to unilaterally assess the legitimacy or validity of ICC decisions," the spokesperson for the International Criminal Court stated regarding the visit to Hungary of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is expected by Viktor Orban on Wednesday despite the international arrest warrant against him, writes A2 CNN.

"If a state has any doubts or concerns about cooperation with the Court, it has the opportunity to consult with it in a timely and effective manner," the ICC spokesperson further emphasizes, recalling that "Article 119 of the Rome Statute clearly establishes that any dispute concerning the judicial functions of the Court must be resolved by the Court itself . "

Amnesty International has also reacted to the Israeli Prime Minister's visit to Budapest, calling on the Hungarian Prime Minister to arrest and hand over Benjamin Netanyahu to the Criminal Court.

"Prime Minister Netanyahu is a suspected war criminal, accused of using starvation as a method of warfare, deliberately targeting civilians and crimes against humanity of murder, persecution and other inhumane acts. As a member state of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Hungary should arrest him if he travels to that country. Any trip he makes to an ICC member state that does not result in his arrest would embolden Israel to commit further crimes against Palestinians. Netanyahu's reported visit should be seen as a cynical attempt to undermine the ICC and its work, and is an insult to the victims of these crimes who seek justice from the Court," said Erika Guevara-Rosas of Amnesty International, according to A2 CNN.

According to her, "Hungary's invitation shows contempt for international law and confirms that suspected war criminals wanted by the ICC are welcome on the streets of a European Union member state."

In November 2024, the ICC issued arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, as well as the commander of the al-Qassam Brigades, Mohammed Diab Ibrahim Al-Masri, on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity.
