A Boeing 787 Dreamliner of the American company Virgin Atlantic has made the first and historic transatlantic flight powered by the green fuel consisting of cooking oil.
The plane took off from London's Heathrow Airport and landed at New York's JFK Airport.
Virgin founder Sir Richard Branson, British Transport Secretary Mark Harper and Virgin Atlantic chief executive Shai Weiss were among the passengers on the flight, which did not carry passengers.
" The world will always assume that something cannot be done, until it becomes reality. The spirit of innovation is succeeding and trying to prove that we can do things better for the benefit of all ," said Branson.
Meanwhile, the British Transport Secretary said: " Today's 100% Saf powered flight shows how we can decarbonise transport both now and in the future, reducing life cycle emissions by 70% and inspiring the next generation to green solutions. ”
Asked if the greenest option would be not to fly at all, Harper told BBC Breakfast that " people want to fly and the government in London wants it to continue to be done in a way that meets environmental regulations ". (A2 Televizion)
