Several Ukrainian military intelligence officials have been poisoned, including the wife of the head of Ukraine's GUR military intelligence chief, Marianna Budanova. The news was confirmed by a spokesman for the agency to Reuters, according to which she is being treated in hospital for heavy metal poisoning.
"Yes, I can confirm the information, unfortunately, it is true," said GUR spokesman Andriy Yusov, without clarifying when the incident occurred.
"She went to the doctor in time, if a week later, the consequences would have been more serious," another source said without giving further details.
An investigation is underway into the attempted assassination of the wife of the Chief of Defense Intelligence. Marianna Budanova is the wife of Kyrylo Budanov, who heads the Ukrainian military intelligence agency GUR, which has been prominently involved in covert operations against Russian forces during the 21-month war.
Budanov said in August that his wife had been living with him "in his office" and had not left him since the beginning of the occupation for security purposes.
Russia has been accused on numerous occasions of carrying out assassinations and attempted murders with poisons involving heavy metals, which are not usually present in lethal amounts in everyday life.
Budanov, a former commando who has carried out a series of daring missions against Russian forces, rose through the ranks of Ukraine's military intelligence to become a general at the age of 35.
He himself has been the target of no less than 10 Russian assassinations, one of which, a car explosion, left him seriously injured.
