The death toll in the Magdeburg Christmas market attack has risen from two to five, according to German media.
The number of injured has increased from 68 to more than 200. Of them, 41 are seriously injured, an increase of 26 people from last night's figures.
The incident happened after a car plowed into a crowd at a Christmas market in the German city of Magdeburg on Friday.
An adult and a baby died in the attack and the suspected driver has been arrested, Saxony-Anhalt state Prime Minister Reiner Haseloff said in a televised statement.
The area around the car was previously cordoned off on suspicion that an explosive device might be inside, but police later found no such device. The suspected driver is a 50-year-old doctor from Saudi Arabia who works in Saxony-Anhalt and has lived in Germany since 2006.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz wrote on social networks that his thoughts were with the families of the victims of the attack. "We are on their side and on the side of the people of Magdeburg. My thanks go to the dedicated rescue workers in these hours of distress," he said.
The Foreign Ministry of Saudi Arabia condemned the attack, writes A2 CNN.
"The Kingdom affirms its position in rejecting violence and expresses its condolences and sincere condolences to the families of the deceased and to the Federal Republic of Germany, its government and people, with its wishes for a speedy recovery for the injured," it said. in a statement.
President Macron also reacted, saying in 'X' that "France shares the pain of the German people and expresses its full solidarity", he added.
