Mexico has been shaken by a macabre discovery at a ranch in the state of Jalisco that has been dubbed the "Mexican Auschwitz." Authorities are trying to figure out what happened at this training camp used by the powerful Jalisco New Generation cartel, writes A2 CNN.
The released images show hundreds of pairs of shoes, bags, clothes and personal belongings abandoned, as well as the charred remains of bones, skulls, fingers and teeth. A farewell note found there read: "My love, if one day I don't come back, I just want you to remember how much I love you."
According to the Washington Post, the “school” was discovered by a search group called the Jalisco Search Fighters, which is searching for the 120,000 people reported missing in Mexico. Raul Servin Garcia, a member of the group searching for his son who went missing in 2018, said the scene was terrifying: “You can’t describe the feeling when you see hundreds of shoes piled up. Your mind immediately imagines the worst.”
According to the investigation, the cartel lured young people to the bus station in Guadalajara with promises of jobs. When they learned the truth, they had no way out. Those who tried to leave or failed the training tests were executed. Some survivors said they were forced to kill each other.
Authorities had entered the ranch since September 2023, but had not discovered the mass graves. Now, federal investigators are examining the possibility of collusion between the cartel and local officials. Mexico continues to grapple with unchecked cartel violence, while families of the missing demand answers and justice. (A2 Televizion)
