US Secretary of State Antony Blinken made an unannounced visit to Iraq to meet Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani for talks on the future of neighboring Syria.
Blinken is visiting the region after the rapid fall of Bashar al-Assad's government in the face of an advance by Syrian opposition factions.
Assad's ouster caught Washington by surprise, and outgoing President Joe Biden's administration is urging the victorious rebels, with whom it is trying to forge ties, to form a government that avoids Islamist factions and includes Syria's minorities.
Blinken visited the US embassy in Baghdad and said he spoke with Sudan about the situation in Syria. (A2 Televizion)
