Russia is conceding defeat in the Middle East. CNN reports that Moscow is preparing to withdraw troops from Syria. According to satellite images collected by Maxar on Friday morning, Russia appears to be loading and preparing aircraft departing from its military bases in Syria.
Two heavy military transport aircraft An-124 were present at the Russian air base in Latakia on the Mediterranean coast of northwestern Syria, both with their noses raised, indicating that they are ready to receive cargo.
An attack helicopter was also being dismantled, probably indicating that it was being prepared for transport. Meanwhile, Turkey persuaded Russia and Iran not to intervene in Syria during the rebel offensive that led to the fall of Bashar al-Assad, the Turkish foreign minister said on Friday.
"The most important thing to do was talk to the Russians and the Iranians and make sure they don't enter the equation militarily. We talked to the Russians and the Iranians and they understood," said Hakan Fidan during an interview with the media in Ankara. The Turkish embassy in Damascus will reopen tomorrow, the foreign minister announced, among other things.
Meanwhile, a Qatari delegation will arrive in Syria on Sunday to hold meetings with officials of the transitional government after the overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad.
A diplomatic source in Doha disclosed this to AFP. In Syria, “the transition must protect all minorities. And I agree with those who called for the creation of preconditions for a safe and dignified return of refugees".
