American and Russian diplomats met in Istanbul on Thursday for talks about the operations of their respective embassies in Moscow and Washington.
The meeting is the latest in a series of exchanges between the two sides, including a phone call earlier this month between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Efforts to restore US-Russia relations were part of the agenda in last week's talks between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
After those talks in Riyadh, the US State Department said the two sides had agreed to establish "a consultation mechanism to address problems in our bilateral relations with the objective of taking the necessary steps to normalize the functioning of our respective diplomatic missions."
