"We will attack it from the air", reveals Trump's plan to contain

Donald Trump is considering options to stop Iran from building nuclear weapons, including the possibility of pre-emptive airstrikes, a move that would break Tehran's long-standing policy of containing Tehran through diplomacy and sanctions, media reports have revealed. American Wall Street Journal.

The option of a military strike against nuclear facilities is under more serious review by some members of Trump's team, who are considering responses to Iran after the fall of President Bashar al-Assad's regime. Iran's weakened regional position and Tehran's recent escalating nuclear disclosures have fueled sensitive domestic discussions, members of Donald Trump's staff told the WSJ.

However, the entire discussion on this issue remains in the early stages. Trump has told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in recent phone calls that he is concerned about an Iranian nuclear explosion, two sources told US media, signaling that he is seeking proposals to prevent that outcome.

The president-elect wants the plans to avoid sparking a new war, especially one that could draw in the US military, as attacks on Tehran's nuclear facilities have the potential to put the US and Iran on a collision course.

Iran has enough highly enriched uranium alone to build four nuclear bombs, making it the only non-nuclear weapons country that produces 60% near weapons-grade fissile material. It would only take a few days to turn that stockpile into weapons-grade nuclear fuel.

One US plan involves increasing military pressure by sending more US forces, warplanes and ships to the Middle East. The United States could also sell advanced weapons to Israel, such as bunker-busting bombs, bolstering its strike power to take Iranian nuclear facilities offline.

The threat of military force, especially if coupled with US-imposed sanctions that succeed in crippling Iran's economy, could convince Tehran that there is no other option but a diplomatic solution to the crisis. (A2 Televizion)
