El Salvador has offered to accept "dangerous criminals" held in US prisons, including those with American citizenship, says US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
According to foreign media, after meeting with President Nayib Bukele on a visit to the Central American country, Rubio said the US was "deeply grateful," adding that "no country has ever made an offer of friendship like this."
El Salvador will also accept for deportation immigrants of any nationality who are criminals and are in the U.S. illegally, the Secretary of State said.
Rubio has praised Bukele for his policies on gang violence, which have dramatically reduced crime rates in El Salvador, once the murder capital of the world, but whose initiatives have been criticized by human rights groups.
Rubio told reporters: "He has offered to house in his prisons dangerous American criminals in custody in our country, including those with American citizenship and legal residency."
"We are deeply grateful. I spoke to President Trump about this earlier today," he said, writes A2 CNN.
Rubio is on his first overseas tour as the top U.S. diplomat and has sought to affirm the Trump administration's priorities in the region, including demanding that Panama make "immediate changes" to what he calls China's "influence and control" over the Panama Canal. (A2 Televizion)
