Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth visits the country's southern border

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth traveled to Texas to visit the southern border of the United States, as President Donald Trump takes steps to implement a right-wing agenda that includes increasing the US military's commitment to stem the flow of illegal immigrants.

In his first trip as Pentagon chief, Hegseth will observe operations and meet with US troops who have been sent to the area under the direction of President Trump.

"I look forward to meeting our amazing warriors and seeing the hard work they are doing to secure our southern border. We will continue to fulfill this vital mission," Mr. Hegseth posted on the X platform.

Mr. Trump ordered 1,500 additional military personnel to the border just days after taking office, and his administration has conducted several rounds of raids and arrests of immigrants. Some immigrants have been removed by military aircraft.

Border security is a top priority for the president, who declared a national emergency at the US-Mexico border on his first day in office.

The additional personnel bring the total number of active-duty troops deployed there to about 4,000. Ahead of his visit to the border, Mr. Hegseth posted on X that Mr. Trump "wants 100% control of border operations - and we will make it happen." VOA (A2 Televizion)
