Donald Trump's special envoy for Ukraine and Russia, Keith Kellogg, has made critical comments about the attack on Russian general Igor Kirillov. In an interview with the American media, Fox Business, Kellog said that war has rules and that some things should not be done.
"There are rules in war, and there are some things you simply must not do. If a general on the battlefield is a legitimate target, a targeted attack on persons not directly on the battlefield represents a violation of those rules. If you kill the generals in their city you are expanding the conflict," said Keith Kellogg, Donald Trump's envoy for Russia and Ukraine.
The senior US official described the attack as "not smart", but also stressed that he did not consider it a military setback. "If you hire a mercenary to do it, I don't think it's a good idea," he said. "But this is war. And war is ugly," he said.
Kirillov was killed by an improvised explosive device in Moscow on Tuesday. The head of the Russian armed forces had gained notoriety in the Russian capital due to his accusations in the media against Kiev and Washington for maintaining laboratories for the production of biological weapons in Ukraine, but also for alleged plans to dispose of so-called dirty weapons , or radioactive ones. He was accused of being involved in the use of chemical warfare agents against Ukrainian soldiers.
Trump, who will be sworn in for a second term on January 20, has promised to end Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine. The Republican has so far left it open how exactly he wants to achieve this.
Kellogg, who has already held various posts during Trump's first term in office, is likely to play a key role in the project. According to US media reports, he has presented a plan that would freeze the front line and force both sides to negotiate. (A2 Televizion)
