Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has called on newly elected US President Donald Trump to keep his election promise and take steps to build peace. "We expect Mr. Trump to fulfill the commitments he made before the election. He should take steps to build peace, not to start a new war," Erdogan stressed.
Speaking about the crisis in Gaza, Erdogan said the situation there is an open wound for the entire Islamic world. "Gaza is a pain in our hearts. We are obliged to work tirelessly to stop this suffering," he said.
He stressed that Islamic countries have not yet managed to take a united stance on the issue. "Unfortunately, we have not been able to take a common step," Erdogan said, adding that some countries such as Qatar are helping Gaza with tools and construction equipment to clear the rubble and rebuild the city, writes A2 CNN.
Regarding the situation in Syria, Erdogan said that construction equipment is also needed there to recover the damage caused by the war. He added that Turkey is ready to help in this regard.
Erdogan also criticized the lack of a clear ceasefire in Gaza, despite statements about a deal. "We are not seeing signs of a real ceasefire," he said. The Turkish president also expressed interest in the outcome of the meeting between President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, saying he hopes for a positive solution that will contribute to global peace.
