French MEP Raphaël Glucksmann has made an unusual request to the United States, suggesting that France take back the Statue of Liberty, arguing that America no longer represents the values for which this gift was offered by the French people in 1886.
Glucksmann, known for his strong support for Ukraine, has sharply criticized the policies of US President Donald Trump and his actions, which he considers a betrayal of democratic values.
"To the Americans who have chosen to side with tyrants and trample on fundamental freedoms, we say: give us back the statue," he said during a conference in Paris, adding that the monument must be returned home.
The Statue of Liberty, designed by Frenchman Auguste Bartholdi and donated by France in 1886 on the 100th anniversary of American Independence, has been a symbol of friendship and shared values between the two nations.
Glucksmann has linked this request to Trump's policy of restricting academic and scientific freedoms in the US, adding that he and many others are already concerned about violations of intellectual freedom in the US.
Furthermore, Glucksmann has opposed Trump's measures that have affected the country's research institutions, emphasizing that many researchers and intellectuals may leave the US to work in France, where they will be able to carry out their work without hindrance.
