Three days of mourning began today in the city of Kryvyi Rih after one of the deadliest attacks on Ukrainian civilians in recent months.
According to foreign media, a Russian missile that hit Volodymyr Zelenskyy's hometown on Friday killed 11 adults and nine children, according to local authorities.
The Ukrainian military said it was an attack with cluster munitions, hitting a densely populated area, writes A2 CNN.
The ages of the victims ranged from three to 79, the mayor of Kryvyi Rih said, adding that 33 people, including four children, were still being treated in hospital.
Local clergy held a memorial service at a playground near the strike site, and separately residents said their final goodbyes to a nine-year-old boy who was reportedly killed while taking a nap.
"A reckless disregard for civilian life," they said, writes A2 CNN.
Russia said, without evidence, that its "high-precision strike" targeted a military gathering of "Western unit commanders and instructors", killing up to 85 of them, a claim dismissed by Kiev as disinformation.
UN human rights chief Volker Turk has called for a "prompt, thorough and independent" investigation into the attack.
"The use of an explosive weapon with a wide-area effect in the Russian Federation in a densely populated area and without any visible military presence shows a reckless disregard for civilian life," he said, writes A2 CNN.
"Even if the Russian authorities had information that military personnel might be present, the manner and circumstances of the attack could constitute an indiscriminate attack," the UN human rights office added. (A2 Televizion)
