Gas in exchange for peace, EU opens "doors" to Russian pipelines

Gas in exchange for peace. This is the plan that some European officials are discussing among themselves as part of a possible agreement to end the war in Ukraine. This fact has been reported by the prestigious British Financial Times, citing sources close to the talks.

Three officials briefed on the talks said the idea was supported by some representatives from Germany and Hungary, with support from other capitals that see it as a way to lower energy costs in Europe, writes A2 CNN.

“Some big member states are putting pressure on energy prices and this is definitely a solution to bring them down,” one official told the Financial Times. The simple proposal to resume gas sales from Russia has angered officials in Brussels and diplomats from several Eastern European countries, many of whom have worked to reduce the EU’s dependence on Russian energy over the past three years. “It’s crazy. How stupid do we have to be to even consider this option,” one MEP told the Financial Times.

Meanwhile, fighting continues in eastern Ukraine. A Russian attack drone hit a residential building in Sumy overnight, killing four people and wounding nine others, including a child. The Sumy regional military administration reported this on Telegram, quoted by Ukrinform, explaining that rescue operations are underway.

The Russian Defense Ministry said its troops had taken control of the village of Novoyelyzavetivka in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region, near the logistics hub of Pokrovsk, the latest target in their steady advance westward. The Ukrainian military’s General Staff did not mention the village in its evening report, which reported “intensive” Russian activity in the area. The popular Ukrainian military blog DeepState, which tracks military positions based on open-source materials, reported that Novoyelyzavetivka was under Russian occupation. Pokrovsk is home to Ukraine’s only coal mine that produces coking coal for the steel industry, which has been closed as Russian troops approach the city and is considered a key target for Moscow.
