At the infamous Guantanamo Bay prison, where suspected terrorists have been held and tortured for years, US President Donald Trump has decided to build a detention center for around 30,000 illegal immigrants.

He said the facility at the US Navy base in Cuba will be separate from the high-security military prison and will host "the worst foreign criminals who threaten the American people," A2 writes.

"Some of them are so bad that we don't trust them to leave them in the hands of their countries because we don't want them back here, so I'm going to send them to Guantanamo," Trump said.

Guantanamo Bay has long been used to house immigrants, a practice criticized by human rights groups. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth tried to soften the concept of the new center, saying it would not function as a prison but as a temporary facility for those immigrants whose countries of origin refuse to accept them.

"President Trump has been very clear about those countries that will refuse to take back their criminals. We will hold them accountable. In other cases, we want to have a place to keep these criminals safely, temporarily. Guantanamo Bay is a perfect place," Hegseth said.

The Cuban government was quick to condemn the plan, accusing the US of torture and illegal detention on occupied land. Trump made the announcement shortly before signing into law a bill passed by Congress to detain undocumented immigrants accused of theft and violent crimes.

This is the first law signed by the President. The United States has leased the Guantanamo Bay land from Cuba for more than a century. Cuba objects to the lease and routinely refuses U.S. payments.
