Gaza is in turmoil. An Israeli airstrike killed four Palestinians, the territory's civil emergency service said, as Arab mediators and the United States tried to resolve differences between Hamas and Israel over a January 19 ceasefire agreement.
The Israeli military said its air force attacked "terrorists who were engaged in suspicious activity on the ground in central Gaza and posed a threat to the force."
Israel sent a delegation to the Qatari capital, Doha, for more talks on the ceasefire, and Hamas leaders concluded a round of talks in Cairo earlier this week. But there has been no sign of progress in resolving the differences that threaten a return to armed conflict.
Hamas wants to begin talks on a second phase that was supposed to reach an agreement on a full Israeli withdrawal from the enclave. Israel demands that Hamas release the remaining hostages before starting the second phase negotiations.
On Tuesday, Hamas accused Israel of trying to cause a famine in Gaza by continuing to suspend aid and also by its decision to cut off its last electricity line to the enclave, a move that affected a water desalination and sewage treatment facility.
"We call on the mediators to put pressure on the occupation to keep its promises and immediately open the crossings, ensure the flow of humanitarian aid, and end the policy of collective punishment pursued by the occupying authorities against our people," a statement said. (A2 Televizion)
