Plane's black boxes found, no survivors after crash, investigations begin

The black boxes of the plane that crashed into a military helicopter in Washington, DC, have been found, raising questions about the personnel and other calls at the airport where the plane was landing.

The flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder, known as black boxes, can help provide data to investigators about what may have gone wrong on the flight.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said late Thursday night that the two boxes were being transported to one of its laboratories for evaluation. The agency hopes to have a preliminary report ready within 30 days.

Officials are still investigating the cause of the incident that killed all 67 people on board the two planes.

According to international media, there should have been two people to manage air traffic control for helicopters and planes flying in the area, one of the most controlled airspaces in the world, but according to sources cited by the BBC in the US, there was only one person at the time of the crash.

All 67 passengers aboard an American Airlines plane and a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter that collided midair Wednesday night are presumed dead, a grim tragedy that will be remembered as the deadliest U.S. aviation disaster since 2001. (A2 Televizion)
