Germany to produce long-range missiles with Ukraine, Russia proposes

Berlin will help Kiev develop new long-range weapons that can hit targets on Russian territory, AFP reported, citing German Chancellor Friedrich Merz during a visit by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy today.

"Our defense ministers will sign a memorandum of understanding today regarding the procurement of long-range weapons systems manufactured in Ukraine," Merz said, without naming the manufacturers involved, A2 CNN reports.

"There will be no distance restrictions, allowing Ukraine to fully defend itself, even against military targets outside its territory," he said at a joint press conference, A2 CNN writes.

The production of long-range weapons "can take place both in Ukraine and here in Germany. We will not provide further details until further notice," he stressed.

Merz hailed the project as " the beginning of a new form of military-industrial cooperation between our countries that has great potential."

Meanwhile, Russia has proposed holding the next round of peace talks with Ukraine on June 2 in Istanbul, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Wednesday, A2 CNN reports.

"The Russian side, as agreed, has immediately drafted a corresponding memorandum, which sets out our position on all aspects of reliably overcoming the root causes of the crisis," he said.

The Russian delegation, led by Vladimir Medinskiy, is ready to present the memorandum to the Ukrainian side and provide the necessary clarifications during the second round of direct talks resumed in Istanbul next Monday, Lavrov added. (A2 Televizion)
