"Iran is in great danger." This is the warning that US President Donald Trump has made against the Islamic country.
The harsh reaction comes after signals that Iran has advanced towards finalizing a nuclear weapon. Asked by reporters what would happen if high-level negotiations between Iran and the US fail, Trump said that all the risk would be on Iran.
"I think if the talks are not successful with Iran, then Tehran will be in great danger. I hate to say whether we will use military action or not, but it is a great danger, because they cannot have nuclear weapons," Trump declared.
Trump's warning comes after a surprise announcement by the US President that the US would begin high-level dialogue on Tehran's nuclear program, but Iran's foreign minister said the discussions in Oman would be indirect. The meeting was also confirmed by Iran's foreign minister, who said the talks would be "indirect" but could be "as much an opportunity as a test."
Trump did not provide further details about the talks, which officials are involved: "High level, very high level discussions. We are discussing with the Iranians. We have a big meeting on Saturday and we are discussing with them directly. But you should know, many people are saying, that maybe you are going to a surrogate meeting, or that you are not discussing directly, you are mediating with other countries. No, we are discussing with them directly. I think a deal will be made. That will be a good thing for Iran."
The United States and Iran held indirect talks during former President Joe Biden's tenure, but they made little or no progress. The last known direct negotiations between the two governments were under then-President Barack Obama, who spearheaded the 2015 international nuclear deal that Trump later abandoned.
But, according to Middle East analysts, direct talks will not happen without the explicit approval of Khamenei, who in February said negotiations with the US were not "smart, wise or honest."
