A judge at Brazil's Federal Supreme Court has ordered former President Jair Bolsonaro to be placed under house arrest, citing repeated violations of preventive measures previously imposed by the court, the news was reported by Brazilian media outlet O Globo.
According to Judge Moraes, Bolsonaro has "ignored and failed to respect" the Court's decisions, defying its authority. Specifically, he participated via video call in a protest held on Sunday on Copacabana beach, in the southern area of Rio de Janeiro, where thousands of his supporters gathered.
This participation was considered by the Court as a violation of previous conditions left by justice, which prohibited the former president from communicating with others investigated or involved in legal cases related to attacks on democratic institutions in Brazil. The decision to house arrest comes in the context of broader investigations underway against Bolsonaro and some of his allies, regarding efforts to undermine the results of the 2022 elections and the organization of acts that could pose a threat to the democratic order.
The new measure against Bolsonaro is seen as a clear signal from Brazilian justice to protect democratic institutions and guarantee that no one, including former leaders of the country, is above the law. (A2 Televizion)
