Israel increases attacks on Gaza, Hamas political leader killed, people want to

Gaza has been rocked by a surprise Israeli military attack. IDF missiles have hit a hospital in Gaza, killing five people, including a Hamas political leader. Palestinian doctors and Hamas said the Israeli strike targeted a key figure in the militant group.

The Gaza Health Ministry said the attack hit the surgery department at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis. Hamas said a member of its political bureau, Ismail Barhoum, was killed.

Israel's defense minister, Israel Katz, confirmed that the target was Barhoum.

Hamas-affiliated media said Barhoum was being treated in hospital for wounds sustained in a previous attack. Israel says Hamas systematically takes refuge in hospitals, schools and shelters, which the group denies.

After two months of relative calm in the war, Gazans are again fleeing for their lives after Israel effectively abandoned a ceasefire, launching a new air and ground campaign against Hamas on Tuesday. Another Hamas leader, Salah al-Bardaweel, was killed in an attack in Khan Younis, Hamas said earlier. Both Bardaweel and Barhoum were members of Hamas’s 19-member decision-making body, the politburo, 11 of whom have been killed since the war began in late 2023, according to Hamas sources.

Explosions echoed across the northern, central and southern Gaza Strip on Monday morning as Israeli jets hit targets in those areas in what witnesses said was an escalation of attacks that began earlier in the week. (A2 Televizion)
