As the temporary truce between Israel and Hamas has entered its 4th and final day, there is hope that the pause in the fighting can be extended further. The militant group that rules the Gaza Strip wants the ceasefire to continue, and promises to increase the number of hostages released.
Also, US President Joe Biden said he was working on such an opportunity, so that more hostages could be released and more aid could enter the Gaza Strip. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the initial agreement could be extended, but that Israeli operations would resume in full force after the end of the ceasefire.
"The possibility of releasing an additional 10 hostages every day is being discussed, but I told US President Joe Biden that at the end of the ceasefire we will return to operations in full force, until our goals are met; the elimination of Hamas and of course the release of all hostages," Benjamin Netanyahu said.
Another 17 hostages were released on the third day of the ceasefire, in exchange for 39 Palestinian prisoners. Over the course of 72 hours, Hamas released a total of 58 hostages, mostly women and children, in exchange for 117 Palestinians held in Israeli prisons. 13 Israelis, 3 Thais and a Russian citizen were successfully transferred from Gaza to Israel on Sunday. Among those released was the 4-year-old American-Israeli Abigeil Idan, who, as President Biden said, had witnessed the killing of her parents by Hamas during the October 7 massacre.
