Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wants foreign troops to be stationed in Ukraine until the country joins the NATO military alliance.
Zelensky made his comment during a joint press conference in Kiev with the leader of the German opposition Friedrich Merz, the main contender for the post of Chancellor of Germany.
"A contingent of troops from one country or another can be present in Ukraine as long as it is not part of NATO. But for this we need to have a clear understanding of when Ukraine becomes a member of the EU and when it becomes a member of NATO, what happens then? close", he said Zelensky.
Ukraine, which has made a concerted push to receive an invitation to join NATO, has insisted throughout the war that it needs security guarantees to prevent Russia from launching another invasion after current hostilities cease.
The Ukrainian leader told reporters he hoped to call outgoing US President Joe Biden in the coming days to discuss NATO membership.
"I intend to call President Biden in the near future to discuss the issue of an invitation to join NATO," he said through a translator. He is the current president and many go along with his thinking. His discussion with Trump before taking office doesn't make much sense."
Russia has demanded that Ukraine abandon its NATO ambitions and sees Kiev's membership in the alliance as an unacceptable security threat. (A2 Televizion)
