Russian drones and missiles hit Kiev, leaving at least six dead and dozens injured. A hospital and residential buildings were also damaged. Meanwhile, Donald Trump has attacked Putin's trusted friend Dmitry Medvedev, who he says is "entering very dangerous territory".
Russia launched a combined missile and drone attack on Kiev, killing at least six people, including a child, and injuring dozens more.
A 6-year-old boy was among the dead, said the city's military administrator, who said the overnight attack had caused damage to 27 sites in four districts of the Ukrainian capital. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy posted a video of the burning rubble, saying people were still trapped under the rubble of a residential building.
"It's a terrible morning in Kiev. Brutal Russian attacks destroyed entire residential buildings and damaged schools and hospitals," Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha posted on X with an image of a destroyed apartment block. Russia, which denies targeting civilians, has in recent months stepped up airstrikes on Ukrainian cities and towns far from the front lines of its occupation, now in its fourth year. According to The Kyiv Independent newspaper, the attacks have sparked numerous fires, damaging a hospital, an educational institution and residential buildings, among other things. Journalists reported multiple explosions in the city.
US President Donald Trump, signaling frustration with his Russian counterpart, this week cut short a deadline for Vladimir Putin to make peace.
"President Trump has been very generous and very patient with Putin, trying to find a solution," Sybiha wrote.
Most recently, he sent a warning to former President and Putin confidant Dmitry Medvedev, whom the US had threatened with new sanctions: "Tell Medvedev, the failed former president of Russia who still thinks he is president, to be careful with his words. He is treading on very dangerous ground!"
Medvedev had accused Trump of playing with ultimatums. Each of them, Medvedev continued, was "a threat and a step towards war." "Not between Russia and Ukraine, but with his own country." (A2 Televizion)
