France's foreign minister said Wednesday that the European Union will not allow other countries to attack its sovereign borders, responding to comments by US President-elect Donald Trump to take control of Greenland.
The president-elect did not rule out using military force or economic action to take control of the Panama Canal and Greenland, saying that American control of both is vital to the national security of the United States.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said he did not believe the United States would invade the large Arctic island, which has been part of Denmark for more than 600 years.
"There is clearly no doubt that the European Union would allow other nations of the world to attack its sovereign borders, whoever they are," he told France Inter radio. "We are a strong continent," he added.
Mr Trump's comments further outlined an expansionist agenda, two weeks before he takes office on January 20 in Washington.
"If you're asking me if I think the United States is going to invade Greenland, my answer is no. But have we entered a period of time where it's survival of the fittest? Then my answer is yes," Minister Barrot said. .
