Panamanian Foreign Minister Javier Martinez-Aka confirmed the country's undisputed control over the Panama Canal, despite threats from US President-elect Donald Trump of possible military or economic intervention.
He emphasized that the sovereignty of the canal is non-negotiable and will remain under Panamanian authority.
"The sovereignty of our canal is not negotiable and is part of our history of war and an irreversible occupation. Our canal has a mission to serve humanity and its commerce. This is one of the values that Panamanians offer to the world, by guaranteed the international Community not to participate, nor be an active part of any conflict.
The only hands that control the canal are the Panamanians and it will continue to be so to dialogue today and always, for investments and good relations but with the clear slogan that the homeland is first. Mr. Trump's thoughts today, that he was talking about a certain amount of money, are not true. No offers have been received, let it be clear. No offer of any kind. Let it be clear, the canal is Panamanian and it will continue like that," he said. (A2 Televizion)
