Political crisis in France, government survives no-confidence motion

It seems that the political crisis is not over yet in France. France's new Prime Minister, François Bayrou, has survived a no-confidence motion in the French Parliament. His center-right government had secured the support of the socialist left opposition. Unlike their partners on the left, including the Greens and the Communists, most socialist MPs did not withdraw their confidence in Bayrou's government.

Bayrou, whose cabinet lacks a parliamentary majority, could also rely on the Socialists for future projects - and thus avoid dependence on Marine Le Pen's right-wing nationalists, A2 CNN reports.

" The motion of no confidence that you presented, Mr. Bompard, has one meaning: 'We want the confrontation to remain between the people. What you are saying is 'We do not want to remain' - that is what your motion of no confidence says. 'We do not want to get out of a spirit of confrontation and practice dialogue, negotiation, building a future that we must build together'. That is why the places you are calling for support are completely empty," said French Prime Minister Francois Bayroi, writes A2 CNN.

His predecessor Michel Barnier was rejected by the entire left camp in France. Only right-wing nationalists tolerated his minority cabinet. When Le Pen's faction withdrew confidence in the government in a dispute over the planned austerity budget, they and the left-wing opposition ousted Barnier after just three months in office.

Socialist leader Olivier Faure warned that the government would not be supported unconditionally. But the tense world situation needs a Europe as a balancing force. France cannot afford to slip into the hands of right-wing extremists. But within their own political camp, the Socialists have recently come under pressure because of their considerations of tolerating a center-right government. Bayrou had made concessions to the Socialists on issues such as pensions. (A2 Televizion)
