Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has expressed his concern about the situation in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and relations between Israel and Lebanon, A2 CNN reports. During a visit to Qatar, he stressed that the daily actions of the Israeli army do not comply with the agreements reached with Hamas and Lebanon and that they contradict UN Security Council resolutions.
Lavrov underlined that Russia and Qatar share the same position on the need to respect the principles adopted by the Security Council. He stated that the issue of the creation of a Palestinian state is essential and any attempt to avoid this by displacing Palestinians to other regions is a major risk to regional stability.
"In this regard, both Qatar and the Russian Federation share the need to move the process in the direction of respecting the principles adopted by the UN Security Council. The issue of the creation of a Palestinian state is fundamental. And if attempts are made to bury these Security Council decisions and replace the creation of a Palestinian state with the relocation of Palestinians to other regions, this will only set off a time bomb, as has happened more than once during the long decades of ignoring demands for a two-state solution," Lavrov said.
Lavrov's statement came after a plan proposed by former US President Donald Trump, which envisages the displacement of more than 2 million Palestinians from Gaza and the transformation of the territory into a US-controlled zone, which he called the "Middle Eastern Riviera".
This plan has been opposed by many international actors, including Russia and Qatar, who point out that such an action would worsen the situation and lead to a new humanitarian crisis.
Lavrov concluded by emphasizing that stability in the Middle East can only be achieved through respect for international law and implementation of UN decisions on the creation of a Palestinian state. (A2 Televizion)
