Lebanon on the verge of war with Israel, Hezbollah: 1 billion Arabs are ready to

You would need a large piece of paper to list every national crisis the people of Lebanon have faced over the past 50 years.

This multi-religious nation has long struggled to make itself work, with political disputes ending in violent confrontation and a 15-year civil war.

The current situation offers little reason to feel cheerful as a caretaker government struggles to overcome a catastrophic economic crisis.

However, people have something else to worry about, as Hamas's attack on civilians in Israel also threatens Lebanon with engaging in an all-out war with Tel Aviv, which is moving ever closer to their southern border.

The country's most powerful faction, the Shiite group Hezbollah, is currently engaged in a head-to-head battle with the Israelis, mostly fighting within a few kilometers of their shared border.

But this limited conflict could soon change, as the leader of Iran-backed Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah, has expressed unconditional support for Hamas militants.

In a speech broadcast last week, Nasrallah warned that " all options are open ".

The main question that is asked in this case is do the people of Lebanon support an all-out war with Israel?

Everyone knows how devastating a war would be because Lebanon has been through it before.

In 2006, Hezbollah and Israel faced off in a disastrous 33-day war that displaced a million people in Lebanon. Large parts of southern Beirut were destroyed by Israeli bombing.

Former prime minister Fouad Siniora, who took credit for leading the negotiations that resolved that conflict in an exclusive interview with Sky News, said Lebanon cannot afford another war.

"In the last 50 years Lebanon has suffered six Israeli invasions in 1969 in 78 in 82, in 93, 96 and 2006. How many conflicts can this country withstand? I cannot accept this. Now Lebanon is suffering from a series of crises big issues that run parallel to each other. We have a political crisis, we cannot agree on the election of a new president, we cannot renew our institutions and we have a severe economic crisis. That is why I have made clear. We cannot engage in this war."

However, like many Lebanese, the former prime minister is deeply angry about the Israeli occupation of Gaza and the failure of the international community to intervene.

And that's where Siniora finds herself at odds with Hezbollah, who say the situation facing Palestinians in Gaza is unacceptable.

Kassem Kassir, a figure widely regarded as close to Hezbollah's leadership, also spoke for Sky.

"I want peace [with Israel]. We all want peace, but there will be no peace [in the region] without peace in Gaza. What is happening cannot be tolerated. The question should be asked the other way around: "Is it possible to are you silent about what is happening in Gaza?"

The anger and frustration expressed by Siniora and Hezbollah's leadership are shared and strikingly similar. The two sides have a different stance on what should be done about the conflict. The former prime minister says the international community must stop the war - and do it fast.

"There is a situation that needs to be addressed otherwise no one can stop the situation from involving many other countries and many other players which is why the issue is so urgent, sensitive and [potentially] devastating."

Hezbollah sees irritation and indignation with a different eye. In a divided country, such emotions are an asset to be exploited according to Kassir.

"Hezbollah takes into account the presence of supportive public opinion. The more Israel continued the massacres, the closer people came to the idea of accepting the war...every day the war expands inside Gaza, the Lebanese people come closer to joining the war."

This is an important discovery and brings us closer to Hezbollah's strategic thinking. With a military wing that can fight - but cannot defeat - the Israelis, their leaders are looking for a base of support in Lebanon and the region.

Without it, people like Nasrallah will worry about the devastating consequences that would follow a major conflict.

" There are 5 million people in Lebanon, half of whom may support the Palestinians, but there are a billion Arabs in the region who are ready to go to war and support Gaza. We will make the sacrifice when the time is right. We will no longer be silent and the whole region will go to war, including Egypt and Jordan. It will be a historic moment ," says Kassir.
