Arab League backs $53 billion Gaza plan

A $53 billion reconstruction plan that rivals President Donald Trump's idea for the US to "take over Gaza" and remove more than two million Palestinians has been approved by Arab leaders at an emergency summit in the Egyptian capital Cairo.

"The Egyptian plan is now an Arab plan," declared Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit at the end of the several-hour meeting.

Without specifically referring to President Trump's ideas, he underlined that "the Arab position is to reject any displacement, whether voluntary or forced."

Egypt had produced a detailed plan, a 91-page document including images of leafy neighborhoods and grand public buildings, to counter a US scheme labelled a "Middle Eastern Riviera" that shocked the Arab world and beyond.

In his speech, Egyptian President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi also called for a parallel plan alongside physical reconstruction to move towards what is known as the two-state solution. This is widely seen by Arab states and many others as the only sustainable solution to the perennial conflict, but has been staunchly ruled out by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his allies.

This new plan proposes that Gaza be run, temporarily, by a "management committee under the umbrella of the Palestinian government" made up of qualified technocrats, but without a specific role for Hamas. (A2 Televizion)
