Ukraine has reacted to Donald Trump's decision to cut off military aid. Official Kiev said it would do everything it can to preserve its ties with the United States. "President Trump has been clear that he is focused on peace. We need our partners to be committed to that goal as well. We are suspending and reviewing our assistance to ensure that it is contributing to a solution," a US official told Reuters on Monday.
Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said Kiev still had the means to supply its frontline forces. U.S. military aid was invaluable and saved thousands of lives, he said, and Kiev would do everything it could to maintain relations with Washington. “We will continue to work with the U.S. through all available channels,” Shmyhal told a news conference. “We have only one plan — to win and survive. Either we win, or Plan B will be written by someone else.” The Kremlin, for its part, said cutting off military aid to Ukraine was the best possible step toward peace, although it was still waiting to confirm Trump’s move.
The aid suspension puts more pressure on European allies, led by Britain and France, whose leaders visited the White House last week and have publicly embraced Zelenskiy since the Oval Office outburst.
In Germany, Green Party politician Anton Hofreiter is calling for immediate action after the suspension of US military aid to Ukraine. “Europe must immediately launch a large military support package for Ukraine,” Hofreiter tells WELT. “We must buy weapons for this all over the world. To do this, we must immediately use the frozen assets of Russian oligarchs, which amount to around 200 billion euros,” says Hofreiter, who is also chairman of the Bundestag’s EU Affairs Committee. Europe needs its own defense fund of at least 500 billion euros, Hofreiter said. Europe’s military security and deterrence must now be the top priority. (A2 Televizion)
