The war against Ukraine "is not a continuation of the war against fascism." This was stated by the Federal President of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, during his commemorative speech in the German Parliament on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II.
"Putin's war of aggression, his campaign against a free and democratic country, has nothing in common with the fight against National Socialist tyranny in World War II," Steinmeier added, emphasizing that "this historical lie is nothing more than a disguise for imperial madness, grave injustice and the most heinous crimes!"
In his speech to the Bundestag, commemorating the end of World War II, he did not leave the United States out of the picture. The German president spoke harshly about Trump and his actions: "We see with horror that even the oldest democracy in the world can quickly be endangered if the judicial system is ignored, the separation of powers is undermined and academic freedom is attacked." This is also dangerous for Germany and Europe, where the "fascination with authoritarianism and populist temptations" is gaining ground. "Extremist forces" poisoned debates, "played on people's concerns" and turned them against each other.
Regarding the commemoration of World War II, Steinmeier criticized those who “look for a so-called dividing line under our history and responsibility.” He is surprised “when some discredit memory as a guilt cult.” These expressions can unfortunately be heard repeatedly in the Bundestag these days, he added, apparently with the AfD in mind.
