A panic to stockpile supplies has gripped parts of Alaska as about 300,000 residents prepare for a possible volcanic eruption of Mount Spurr, just 130 kilometers from Anchorage.
Memories of the 1992 explosion are still fresh for many residents, who have begun buying everything from duct tape to swimming goggles, earplugs, N95 masks, as well as food, water and supplies for pets.
Eagle River resident Cloe Turner spent $415 buying food, batteries and protective gear. “We might not be able to work and stores might be closed. Last time, the city was covered in ash for a whole month,” she said.
The Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) reported that "volcanic instability continues," citing about 55 earthquakes in the past week alone. According to scientists, this indicates that magma is rising underground, causing cracks in the rocks, writes A2 CNN.
On social media, residents are sharing their preparations. A TikTok user named @FreezeDrySociety posted a video from Walmart buying “weird but clever things” to protect her family from volcanic ash.
She said she had purchased blue duct tape to insulate the house, swimming goggles for eye protection, earplugs, Ziploc bags for electronic devices, nylon stockings to cover car filters, and N95 masks.
According to experts from the International Volcanic Health Hazards Network (IVHHN), volcanic ash can cause irritation to the eyes, nose, and throat, as well as serious problems for those with asthma or pulmonary disease. (A2 Televizion)
