US Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has announced the launch of a five-month research campaign to identify the cause of autism, promising a "massive testing and research effort" involving "hundreds of scientists from around the world."
Kennedy said that by September, his administration will find out what has caused the rise in autism cases and that it will work to “eliminate those exposures.” He cited vaccines, air, water and the food system as part of the investigation.
However, experts and health associations have criticized the plan, calling it unrealistic, harmful and not based on scientific evidence. The Autism Society of America reacted strongly, stressing that autism is not a disease and that focusing solely on environmental factors fuels stigma and misinformation.
Kennedy, who has long linked vaccines to autism without evidence, has come under fire for including on his team David Geier, a discredited and fined man for illegal medical practice and dangerous treatments for autistic children.
Scientists emphasize that autism is a complex disorder, with no single cause, and that scientific research has identified a combination of genetic and environmental factors. So far, there is no evidence that vaccines cause autism. (A2 Televizion)
