Four aides to New York City Mayor Eric Adams plan to resign in the coming days, a withdrawal of support for the mayor after the Justice Department sought to drop criminal charges against Mr. Adams, local media reported on Monday.
The effort to dismiss the charges against Mr. Adams has prompted a series of resignations at the Justice Department by officials who refused to implement the decision to dismiss the charges, which had been confirmed earlier in a grand jury indictment.
Reuters could not confirm reports by WNBC television and the New York Times that four deputy mayors also intended to resign.
Representatives from Mr. Adams' office did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but a spokesman told WNBC television and the New York Times that no one had yet resigned.
Mr. Adams held an online meeting on Sunday with at least three deputy mayors, who expressed their intentions to resign from his administration, WNBC reported, citing two sources familiar with the matter.
The purpose of the meeting was to persuade top aides to delay any decision on his departure, which could weaken the mayor's position as he resists calls for him to resign, WNBC television reported.
Mr. Adams, elected in 2022, has been under pressure to resign since federal prosecutors filed a criminal complaint last September alleging that he had benefited from travel from Turkish officials and political donations from foreigners in exchange for taking actions to benefit Turkey.
