A wave of extreme weather has swept through central and northern Italy, causing widespread flooding, landslides and power outages. Italian weather officials say the most critical situation is in the Piedmont region, where a red alert has been issued for over 100 municipalities. In Monteu da Po, near Turin, a 92-year-old man drowned in his home due to flooding in the local river.
Around 150 people were evacuated in Borgosesia after the Po River and several other streams exceeded safety levels. Meanwhile, heavy rains caused major flooding and road closures in many other areas of Piedmont, including Biella and Verbania, where over 300 rescue operations were carried out by firefighters.
In the Aosta Valley, the situation is also critical: half of the municipalities are without electricity and telephone connections have been cut. Regional roads have been closed due to landslides and traffic has slowed significantly.
In Milan, strong winds and rain forced authorities to close public parks, while downed trees and property damage were reported. One tree fell at the entrance to a school, which was fortunately closed for the holidays.
Regional authorities have called for maximum caution, with the weather expected to improve after noon. The president of the Piedmont region, Alberto Cirio, has confirmed that the next few hours are crucial for stabilizing the situation. (A2 Televizion)
