Massive power outage plunges Czech Republic into darkness, trains stall in

A major power outage has hit much of the Czech Republic, including the capital Prague, causing disruption to rail services and major problems in the country's energy infrastructure.

Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala called the situation an “unprecedented event,” and authorities are investigating the causes of the outage. Interior Minister Vit Rakusan said the national emergency council is on standby and is awaiting a full assessment of the situation.

According to him, about 10 substations have reported serious problems. The minister stated that there is currently no evidence to suggest a terrorist act or cyberattack, stressing that the most likely scenario is a technical defect in the power grid.

The disruption has particularly affected five of the country's 14 provinces, including Prague. Rail services on several lines have been disrupted, Transport Minister Martin Kupka confirmed in a post on the social network 'X'.

The electricity grid operator CEPS announced that part of the transmission system was left without voltage due to a breakdown in some parts of the national grid. Meanwhile, a spokesman for the Polish grid operator (PSE) told Reuters that the outage had not affected the Polish power system.

Czech authorities have assured that all means and resources are being used to restore power as soon as possible. (A2 Televizion)
